The second we stepped on board Deceptive, fleet’s habit of making everything white slapped me in the face. White panels, white lights, white everything. I wanted to hate it, but at the same time, I was experiencing a whole load of ship envy. Warbirds were my weakness, even Cande warbirds. This one had probably been stolen from a decommissioning rig.

I hated Turner even more as we wandered the curving corridors to find the mess hall—the heart of the ship where the crew met to eat and relax. It wasn’t large, especially with me, Fran, One, Jet, Turner, and their walking muscle rammed into every corner, but it made Starkiller’s rec room look like a trashcan.

We didn’t have any guns pointed at us—yet—but there was a pistol on every hip in the room, including mine.

Jet loomed like a purple-haired female wrestler about to throw down. “Sit,” she ordered.

Turner gave her a look designed to warn her off ordering folks around on his vessel, but she was looking at me and missed it.

I smirked at Turner as I took a seat at his table, just to let him know it hadn’t gone completely unnoticed. His eyes narrowed, then skipped to Fran behind me. They’d had a thing going on for a while. I was pretty sure it was over, but who knew with Fran? They’d probably hate-fuck before we were done here.

Fran and One flanked me, One with her non-assuming average face on, not the typical synthetic female appearance she wore around us and not a face Turner would know. Considering these folks’ last run-in with synths, I doubted they’d take kindly to a Chitec Original sitting opposite them.

Turner approached the table and glared like I was the slug he’d thrown salt on. “My condolences for the loss of your brother.”

I blinked at him, any reply lodged in my throat. He’d lost his sister not long ago. Technically, I’d killed her. He knew grief, and his hard face revealed it. Now Bren was dead, and I knew what he might have been feeling all along. A fucking nod was all I could muster.

He sat beside Jet, and here we all were: a terrorist, a pirate, and the nine system’s Most Wanted. And we weren’t trying to murder each other. Miracles were a thing now.

I wished Bren had been here to see it.

Jet began. “We might be the only ones who know the Fenrir Nine is compromised.” She placed one hand over the other on Turner’s shiny table and added, “We didn’t know synths had compromised it. I regretfully didn’t believe you, Captain Shepperd. I lost good people on Thornstos. Now I’m here to listen.”

I glanced at Turner, waiting for him to pull a gun and shoot me between the eyes, but the condolences had thrown me, and now the man looking back at me looked less like a vengeful dick and more like the same kinda beat-up guy I saw in the mirror.

“I’ll tell you,” I said, “but in exchange, we need some of the fleet tech in your hold to jack our ship.
